THE WORLD'S MOST POPULAR DOWEL RELATED NEWSLETTER!
Praise the Dowel!

Greetings Dowel fans!

Its time once again for our monthly Dowel newsletter – and this month we are once again absolutely jam packed with Dowel news! We have updates on our Dowel Art Grant, Dowel viking history – a new Dowel related use for phone boxes, and much much more! So read on and praise the Dowel!

THE DOWEL ART GRANT (AKA THE DAG) CONTEST

This month, we have awarded our first DAGS – and will be proceeding initially with a Dowel sculpture – made from Dowels - a bedazzled Dowel and an idea that may lead to an all new Dowel based clothing line. Updates on these will be shared in the coming months.

Meanwhile - should you have any Dowel related Art Ideas of your own - we are still accepting additional submissions. (As a reminder the Dowel Art Grant is the worlds foremost Dowel Art prize and aims to expand the worlds appreciation of the Dowel through the use of the arts – any art.)

In somewhat related news – a member wrote in to say that it would be cool if the little mermaid statue in Coppenhagen was bigger – bigger “than that Jesus in Brazil” and I would tend to agree although I have not checked what impact this would have on existing shipping lanes.

A New Theory Emerges On Viking Helmets

The Order of the Dowel isnt just about the arts - we are also interested in science - and historical facts. More than a 1000 years ago Vikings sailed in boats made of Dowel from Europe to the Americas (fact). Today their empire continues to exist as an international flat-pack furniture congomerate (fact). Filling in the gaps – it seems highly likely that Vikings wore Dowels on their helmets.

The current prevailing theory from the Dowel Research Institute is that the helmets were used to carry segments of the ships mast when they had to transport the longships across land on their shoulders. By doing so they were able to share the load of the mast. ᛞᛟᚹᛖᛚ in Old Norse or "Dowel" in modem day English was the name for these parts of the mast. A Viking unable to carry his "Dowel" was no longer deemed a Viking. The illustrated example attached show how this worked in practice, as well demonstrate how the erosion over time have left us with the "horned" viking helmets found today

Adopt a phonebox - in the name of the Dowel

As we all know - the use of mobile phones has led to decreased demand for public payphones. Payphones across the world are now being repurposed for other uses – such as small community libraries, homes for defiblerators or as a somewhat private public toliets. The Dowel community being a resourceful bunch are also finding new uses for phone boxes.

It turns out that many pay-phones contain a little weather tight box that can be filled with Dowels! We need volunteers to fill these boxes with Dowels! So that when people see a phone box - they will know that in their time of need they can find a Dowel in there! If you would like to take part in this - all you need to do is fill these boxes with Dowels. If you would like to take it one step further - you can formally adopt your own phone box. All you have to do is write in, telling us the address of the phone box you would like to sponsor, and then visit it occasionally to ensure that it remains stocked with Dowels. We can supply you with all the Dowels you need for this purpose. If anyone challenges you as to why you are sticking things in the phone box – just tell them the Dowel sent you.

That's Weird

If you did write in with a weird story this month – then I must of missed it, sorry…

Anonymous from Hammersmith writes in again to update us on the weird women plaguing his house – to tell us that they are still about, hes followed them as far as Putney at which point he had to stop and turn around - he fears they are going to steel his Dowels.

In my experience - if you are paranoid about something happening - its usually because it is happening. If you have seen or overheard anything weird recently - please write in and tell us. PLEASE.

Hello to our new members – yes, this is what I meant when I told you the newsletter contains “the life affirming secrets of the Dowel”. No, I don’t really expect it will get any better.
